The American Academy of Pediatrics now advises that as part of a "layered approach" to water safety, swimming lessons may start as young as 12 months in the right circumstances: Do you own a boat or live near any water? (Pools, lakes, ponds, ocean) Do any of your friends or members of your family own a boat or live near water? If so, discuss options with your child's physician, contact any of the swim instructors on our INSTRUCTORS page, and observe lessons.
